Don't make us security guards, says teacher stabbed by pupil

BBC News

Don't make us security guards, says teacher stabbed by pupil A teacher who thought she was going to die when she was stabbed by a 13-year-old pupil in the schoolyard has said giving staff handheld scanners will not stop violence in schools. Liz Hopkin, who was attacked at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in 2024, said she felt really worried after the Welsh government announced it would offer school staff more guidance on what to do if they suspected a pupil had brought a weapon into school. It comes as a 15-year-old boy was charged with attempted murder after a teacher was stabbed at a school in the neighbouring county. Hopkin said teachers aren't security, while the Welsh government said the resources were about prevention, building on existing guidance. Hopkin, her colleague Fiona Elias and a pupil were attacked at the school where she worked in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, by a girl who had previously been found with a knife.

I danced with a robot.. here's how I'm convinced the future is here

Daily Mail - Science & tech

I'm convinced the robot revolution is finally here. I was at the world's largest electronics exhibition Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, where engineers have for decades claimed that commercially available humanoids were just around the corner. But this was the year that their predictions finally appeared to be close to reality. This was especially clear when I interacted with a robot that moved and danced with human-like fluidity--stepping one leg in front of the other and swaying naturally to maintain balance. Rounding a corner, I met another who could lift and stack boxes just like an Amazon worker.

Israeli drone attack on Gaza aid convoy kills 12 as hunger crisis deepens

Al Jazeera

An Israeli attack on Palestinian security guards escorting a humanitarian aid shipment in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 12 people and injured dozens, Al Jazeera Arabic's correspondents on the ground and news agencies report. Medics and local residents told the Reuters news agency that at least 30 people were injured, including several in critical condition, following the Israeli attack on Thursday that targeted civilian guards tasked with securing the aid convoy in the southern part of the war-torn enclave. A video clip shared by local Palestinian media in Gaza showed bodies stacked in a morgue that were reported to be the aid convoy's security personnel who were targeted west of Khan Younis. The attack is only the latest by Israeli forces on humanitarian aid workers, convoys and those trying to assist the safe entry of food and other supplies into war-torn Gaza, which is gripped by food shortages and fears of famine in the north of the territory, where an Israeli military ground operation and siege have been ongoing for several weeks. On Sunday night, at least 10 Palestinian people were killed while lining up to buy flour in an Israeli attack on Rafah, which is also in the south of the Gaza Strip.

Could a security guard shortage be solved with this autonomous security robot?

FOX News

Ascento Guard is a two-wheeled, all-terrain robot equipped with cameras. Security guards are in high demand but low supply in the United States. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the security guard occupation is expected to grow by 6.3% in the next decade, but many factors are discouraging people from pursuing this career. To address this challenge, a company has developed an autonomous patrol robot that can navigate any terrain and perform various security tasks. The robot, the Ascento Guard, is designed to offset the lack of security guards and provide a cost-effective and reliable solution for the security guard shortage.
